For young children, ages two to five, early care and educational experiences create a promising early foundation for success in school, career and life.
The impact of early care and education suspensions also extends well beyond preschool doors. Pushing young children out of early care and education settings, such as preschools and child care programs, has broad and long-term consequences for children, families and our economy.
What the data shows
Individual Impact
Unfair disciplinary practices put young children on a track toward lower overall academic achievement and higher dropout rates that even lead to higher rates of incarceration.
Family Impact
When young children get removed from care, parents, families and caregivers are forced to take time off from work or get pushed out of the workforce entirely, hurting their ability to support their families and creating instability in businesses across the state.
Early Care and Education Workforce Impact
Without better preparation and resources like mental health and wellness consultation support, the early childhood workforce lacks access to critical tools needed to provide positive environments for all young learners to grow and develop.
Our mission to build a movement toward eliminating early care and education suspensions, expulsions and exclusionary practices is clear and urgent.
The Coalition is pursuing bold policy and practice solutions that will lead to a thriving early childhood system:
- Where families can rely on access to care to stay in their jobs, support their families and our state’s economy; and
- With a prepared, strong and supported early care and education workforce.
